Four decisions drive every OBC selection. Work through them in this order.
1. Battery voltage platform
400 V and 800 V platforms need different output ranges and different semiconductor choices. An 800 V platform reduces current for the same power, which reduces cable size and losses, but raises insulation and creepage requirements.
2. Charging power and phases
Match the charger to the AC infrastructure of the target market: single phase 3.3–7.4 kW, three phase 11–22 kW. Oversizing the OBC for a market with only single-phase supply adds cost without benefit.
3. Cooling concept
Confirm what the vehicle can provide. Liquid cooling unlocks the highest power density but requires a coolant circuit and a pump. If none is available, forced air or natural convection sets a lower sustained ceiling — check the derating curve, not the nameplate.
4. Standards and market
Connector type, signalling protocol (IEC 61851 / ISO 15118 / GB/T 27930) and EMC requirements all vary by market. Define the destination markets before freezing the specification.
