A production-ready OBC supplier must prove more than electrical performance: verify design ownership, manufacturing controls, traceability, validation, capacity, change discipline and ramp readiness.
Lead time on a charger is set by four things — magnetics, switching devices, potting and the certification slot — and only one of them is about how busy the factory is. A quote that names a number without naming the constraint is a guess.
Three suppliers can quote the same part number and only one of them owns the factory. The difference shows up in the R10 certificate, the change-notification process and who answers when a field failure is traced back to a solder joint.
A 48 V pack makes the battery cheap and the wiring heavy. It also makes the wall socket, not the charger, the real limit — and that changes which power rating is worth paying for.
“Designed to” and “certified to” are not the same sentence, and the difference decides who pays when the vehicle type approval stalls. Here is the document set to ask for before you sign.
A 6.6 kW charger is 6.6 kW at one set of conditions. Ambient temperature, coolant temperature, input voltage and duty cycle each move the number, and the datasheet rarely shows all four on the same curve.
IP67 does not mean “more waterproof” in the way most specification meetings assume. The second digit describes a specific test — immersion for 30 minutes at 1 m — and says nothing about steam, detergent or thermal cycling.
A bidirectional charger is not a charger with a relay on the output. It adds an inverter stage, anti-islanding logic and a neutral reference — and each of those moves cost and risk into the vehicle, not just into the charger.
